Dr. Schönning is a professor of Mechanical Engineering in the School of Engineering at the University of North Florida. She joined the UNF in 2003, after earning her doctorate of philosophy from the University of Central Florida in 2001. Her area of specialty is mechanical systems analysis with a focus in biomechanical applications. She teaches courses in mechanical systems design and analysis including Finite Element Modeling and Analysis, Machine Design, Strength of Materials, CAD, Integrated Design and Manufacture, Dynamics, and a technical elective called Professional Issues in Engineering. Her research includes experimental and analytical research on plantar fasciitis, bone cement, and modeling of the human skull subjected to impacts, as well as non-biomechanical applications of FEA. Dr. Schönning serves is the Founding Director for the Center for the Advancement of Women in Engineering (CAWE) and is passionate about increasing the participation and leadership of women in Engineering and other STEM fields in which women are underrepresented.
